Interpreting at online meetings has become commonplace on the relevant platforms.In order for your online event to run smoothly, the following must be considered in addition to a fast and stable internet connection:  Use headsets!Good sound is essential for all participants, but especially for the interpreters, as they not only listen but speak simultaneously. The use of headsets makes a big difference in this regard.

How does simultaneous interpreting work, and when is it used?

In simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter translates what is being said into another language almost in real time. While the speaker is speaking, the interpreter listens through headphones and relays the translation via a microphone with only a few seconds' delay. The listeners hear the interpretation through headphones.Simultaneous interpreters typically work in a soundproof booth to ensure they can fully concentrate. Because this form of interpreting is very demanding, there are usually two interpreters in the booth who take turns. Simultaneous interpreting is particularly suitable for conferences, meetings, and international events where a smooth, uninterrupted flow is of the essence.

What is a "PFA" (tour guide system) and when is it used?

A tour guide system (sometimes called 'bidule', or PFA in German) is a mobile, radio-controlled transmission system. It consists of a microphone for the interpreter and headphones with receivers for the listeners. This equipment is used, for example, during guided tours or delegation trips where an interpreter booth cannot be set up.Disadvantage: The interpreter perceives all sounds in the room, not just the person speaking, which makes their work a lot more difficult.

Is Artificial Intelligence able to replace professional interpreters?

No – interpreting is human communication. Apart from the precise translation of content, interpreting also involves recognizing nuances and tones, following spontaneous communication, understanding the context, conveying complex content, and handling cultural subtleties.
